Marking system in Rajasthan University semester system

In this blog, I shall write what is written on the back of mark-sheet of Semester system. It is as follows:

NOTE:-
  1. The Examination is based on (a) Semester Examination (b) Continuous Assessment (c) Choice Based Credit System and (d) Relative Grading and Semester Grade Point Average and Cumulative Grade Point Average system as provided in O. 199F1 to O. 199F5.
  2. The Credit Courses have been classified as (i) Compulsory Core Courses (CCC) (ii) Elective Core Courses (ECC) (iii) Seminar (SEM) (iv) Project Work (PRJ) (v) Field Study (FST) (vi) Self Study Courses (SSC) (vii) Other Supportive Courses (OSC) and (viii) Research Publications (RPJ).
  3. The provisions of revaluation and improvement in the annual scheme examination shall also be applicable in the Semester Examinations Scheme (EoSE) for PG Courses.
  4. Scrutiny/Re-valuation of marks will be permitted on request on payment of prescribed fee within 15 days of declaration of result. As a consequence of scrutiny/ Re-valuation, if the grade of the examinee in a particular paper(s) is changed, his/her grade shall also be changed accordingly. However, any such change shall not affect the grade already allotted to other examinees.
  5. Grade in particular examination registered in the courses are awarded on the basis of percentage of marks, namely 'O', 'A', 'B', 'C', 'D', 'E' and 'F' if percentage is between range 75-100, 65-74, 55-64, 45-54, 33-44, 25-32, 0-24 respectively.
  6. The candidate who has not been permitted to appear in EoSE of a particular credit as he/she does not fulfill the minimum 75% attendance requirement and clear Continuous Assessment will be assigned Administrative Grade 'Z'. The candidate who has not been permitted to appear in EoSE as he/she failed to secure atleast 25% marks in all the courses (Papers) in the continuous assessment will be assigned Administrative Grade 'Y'. The candidate who withdraws his/her registration before the commencement of the EoSE will be assigned Administrative Grade 'W'. The candidate who remains absent in EoSE but was registered and was eligible to appear will be assigned Administrative Grade 'X'. The candidate who has been booked under UM and has been recommended Zero marks will be assigned Administrative Grade 'U'.
  7. Students with grade "E" or "F" or "U" or "X" in EoSE will have to get themselves re-registered in the course if they so desire with option either as a Self Study Course or as a regular course depending on the feasibility at the Department. Their CA Grades will be carried forwarded if registered as SSC.
  8. Students with grade "Z" will have to get themselves re-registered in the I/II/III/IV..... Semester course as a regular course if they so desire.
  9. In Continuous Assessment (CA) (Department/College/Institution wise) and End of Semester Examination (EoSE) (University as whole) separate Grades are awarded, as specified under ordinance. The continuous assessment consists of two components, namely, (i) Internal Assessment and (ii) Sessional Test(s) in ratio 30:70. The internal assessment component comprises of assessment of students performance on the basis of factors like attendance, classroom participation, Quiz, home Assignment etc.
  10. The SGPA, CGPA grade and percentage are assigned as per table given below.

Masters of Science (Physics) at University of Rajasthan

University of Rajasthan gives many courses and one of them is Masters of Science (MSc) in physics. You can get degree of this MSc in physics in 3 ways:
  • Semester system at Department of Physics, University of Rajasthan and Kanoria College, Jaipur.
  • Annual system at any affiliated colleges with University of Rajasthan.
  • From any autonomous college which is affiliated with University of Rajasthan and system depends on corresponding college. For example, Subodh College, Jaipur.
Syllabus depends on system. I am trying to brief the syllabus of above three processes:

In semester system:
  • There are 2 type of theory papers: Compulsory and Elective.
  • There are 3 compulsory papers in each semester and as per the availability of teachers, some of the elective papers will be assigned at department.
  • Compulsory papers are as:
    • 1st semester: Classical Mechanics (701); Quantum Mechanics (702); Classical Electrodynamics - I (704)
    • 2nd semester: Atomic and molecular physics (802); Classical Electrodynamics (804); Mathematical Methods in Physics (805)
    • 3rd semester: Advanced Quantum Mechanics (901); Statistical and Solid State Physics (902); Nuclear physics - I (903)
    • 4th semester: Introduction to Quantum Field Theory (X01); Solid State Physics (X02); Nuclear Physics - II (X03)
  • There are 1 compulsory lab in each semester. In each semester there is on elective lab available. Since, student have choice in 3rd and 4th semester whether he want to choose lab or a project.
  • Student have to earn atleast 120 credits in 4 semesters and have to get passing marks in all compulsory. Since, each theory paper gives 4 credits and each lab or project gives 6 credits.
  • Other details about this course will found in coming blogs. Syllabus for semester scheme can be found at University website (pdf).

In annual scheme:
  • In annual scheme in previous student have all compulsory papers. There are 4 papers:
    • Classical Mechanics and Mathematical Method in Physics
    • Classical Electrodynamics
    • Quantum Mechanics, Atomic and Molecular Physics
    • Electronics, Numerical Methods and Computer Programming
  • In final year there are 3 compulsory papers:
    • Advanced Quantum Mechanics and Introductory Quantum Field Theory
    • Nuclear Physics
    • Statistical and Solid State Physics
  • In final year, one subject can be choose by student if his/her college have facilities. As per present syllabus there are two papers available:
    • Microwave Electronics
    • Plasma Physics
  • In previous and final lab is compulsory.
  • Other details about this course will found in coming blogs. Syllabus for annual scheme can be found at University website (pdf).
At autonomous bodies:
  • Autonomous bodies have rights to make there own ways to design syllabus and course. Syllabus for Subodh College, Jaipur can be found on there website. If you want to know about any other place, please let us know in comments. We shall update you.
